Quick answer

Yes, cannabis is legal in Bangkok, under the same national rules that apply everywhere else in Thailand. Bangkok has no cannabis law of its own. Since 26 June 2025, though, purchasing cannabis flower legally requires a prescription from a licensed practitioner, and you must be 20 or older. Since May 2026 only registered medical facilities, pharmacies and herbal product stores can hold a license to sell it. Consuming in public is treated as a nuisance, and ignoring an official order to stop is punishable. Many of the shops that traded in 2022 have closed, so a shop you saw in an old video may not exist anymore.

Is cannabis legal in Bangkok in 2026?

Yes. Thailand removed cannabis from its narcotics schedule in June 2022 and hasn’t reversed that decision. Bangkok follows these national rules, like every other province. We found no cannabis ordinance specific to Bangkok as of 21 September 2026, only national regulations enforced in the capital.

Cannabis flower is treated as a controlled herb, not a narcotic. Extracts are the exception: anything above 0.2 percent THC by weight remains a Category 5 narcotic. CBD products under 0.2 percent THC don’t need a prescription.

Do you need a prescription for cannabis in Bangkok?

Yes, and this is where things have changed most since 2022.

A Ministry of Public Health notification signed on 23 June 2025 took effect on 26 June 2025, limiting sales to medical use. Law firms tracking the notification as published in the Royal Gazette confirm that prescribers include more than hospital doctors: Thai traditional practitioners, dentists, pharmacists and registered herbalists all qualify. The form records the practitioner’s license number, diagnosis, product, dose and storage details, for a maximum 30-day supply.

A prescription from another country isn’t valid here. The same notification bans online sales, vending machines and advertising, and prohibits smoking on shop premises unless it’s under licensed medical supervision. A summary of these controls notes that a seller ignoring the prescription rule could face up to a year in prison, a fine of up to twenty thousand baht, or both.

We haven’t found a single official process that says how a tourist’s consultation must happen, whether at a clinic attached to the shop or at a separate appointment. Who is allowed to sell cannabis in Bangkok now?

Far fewer businesses than in 2022. The May 2026 regulation says only legally registered healthcare facilities, pharmacies and herbal product stores may apply for licenses. Licensed premises must have trained staff on site during opening hours and store flower separately from the shop floor with effective odor and smoke control.

A later count from the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, reported in April 2026, shows the same shakeout: 18,517 cannabis establishments had registered, 7,131 had closed after failing to renew in 2025, and 11,386 were operating legally. The department has also published a map, the Medical Cannabis Geographic Information System, where the public can check whether an outlet holds valid licenses. We found no Bangkok-only shop count from an official source as of 21 September 2026, so we don’t quote one.

Guidelines reported on 22 June 2026 set a thirty-day suspension for lesser breaches such as poor record keeping, an undisplayed license or commercial advertising, and a ninety-day suspension for serious ones such as selling without a prescription. License revocation applies to sales to minors or pregnant women, on-site smoking and online sales.

How can you tell a compliant shop in Bangkok?

Use the rules as a checklist. A compliant shop:

checks your ID against the age limit of 20
has a practitioner who issues the prescription, rather than telling you none is needed
displays its license, since failing to display it is itself a suspendable breach
doesn’t sell online and doesn’t allow smoking inside
appears on the department’s license map when you search for it

Where can you legally consume cannabis in Bangkok?

Consuming in public is what the law targets, and private premises follow the owner’s rules.

A Ministry of Public Health announcement categorizes cannabis smoke and smell as a nuisance under the Public Health Act B.E. 2535. Local officials can tell you to stop, and ignoring the order can land you up to three months in prison, a fine of up to twenty-five thousand baht, or both. No Bangkok bylaw differs from the national rule as of 21 September 2026, as far as we could find.

Driving after consuming falls under the Land Traffic Act, most commonly Section 43(2), which covers driving while impaired by alcohol or other intoxicants. There is no measured THC threshold, so impairment is judged at the officer’s and the court’s discretion.

Can you fly out of Bangkok carrying cannabis?

Domestic and international flights are treated completely differently.
