Cannabis in Thailand: What You Can and Can’t Do in 2026

Thailand made headlines in 2022 when it became the first country in Southeast Asia to decriminalise cannabis. Since then, over 6,000 dispensaries have opened across the country and millions of tourists have visited specifically because of the policy change. However now with Bangkok Post reporting new potential changes in cannabis control, “decriminalised” doesn’t mean “anything goes”; and a lot of people (including us!) are still fuzzy on what the actual rules are.
Here’s a plain-English breakdown of where things stand in 2026: what’s allowed, what’s not, and what to watch out for so you don’t end up in an awkward situation.
What’s actually legal
Adults in Thailand can legally purchase cannabis products from licensed dispensaries. That includes flower, pre-rolls, edibles, oils, and topicals. You don’t need a prescription or a medical card. You walk in, talk to the staff, and buy what you need, same as any other retail transaction.

✓ “Can I consume in my own home?” - Yes :) it’s legal
✓ “Can I bring weed on a flight from Bangkok to Phuket?” - Yes :) it’s legal but make sure to carry your PT33 prescription with you (for personal consumption amounts only)
✓ “Can I buy FDA approved edibles and chill on the beach” - Yes :) it’s legal
What’s not allowed
Smoking cannabis in public spaces is not permitted. That includes streets, parks, shopping malls, temples, and public transport. The rule exists for the same reason smoking cigarettes in those places is restricted. It’s a public health consideration, not a grey area. Penalties for public consumption can include fines, and in some cases more serious consequences if you’re near a school or government building.

Yes. There are no nationality restrictions on purchasing cannabis from a licensed dispensary in Thailand. Tourists can buy the same products as Thai residents. The rules around consumption are the same too. Private use is fine, public smoking is not. Always buy from a licensed shop to make sure the product is tested and properly labelled.
The minimum age is 20, not 18
This catches people out. The legal age for cannabis in Thailand is 20, not 18. So if you’re used to alcohol rules as a benchmark, adjust your expectations. Licensed dispensaries are required to check ID, and reputable ones will. If a shop sells to someone under 20 without checking, that’s on them legally but it’s worth knowing the rule yourself.
“What about edibles and food products?”
Cannabis-infused food and drinks exist in Thailand, but the rules here are less clear-cut. Some restaurants and cafés add cannabis or hemp to dishes (usually at very low doses). Reputable places will tell you exactly what’s in the food and at what strength. If a menu item lists “cannabis” as an ingredient without any dosage information, ask before you order. The effect of edibles takes longer to kick in than smoked flower, and a lot of people underestimate that.
Regulations are still evolving so stay informed
Thailand’s cannabis policy has shifted more than once and it may shift again. Proposed legislation has come and gone, with ongoing debate about tightening rules around recreational use. The practical day-to-day situation at licensed dispensaries has remained stable, but it’s worth checking current guidelines before your trip, especially if you’re planning to visit for an extended period.
