1. The staff should know their stuff

A shop that is clean, organized, and takes its time with you tends to care about what it sells. Be wary of cramped stalls with products tossed on a counter and staff who look bored. You don’t need anything fancy, but you should feel welcome and informed rather than rushed or confused.

Specific complaints like “staff weren’t helpful” or “the flower smelled like hay” tend to be reliable. Generic five-star reviews that mention nothing specific are less trustworthy, especially a cluster of short, overly enthusiastic ones. You can usually set aside negative reviews about needing an ID or a prescription, since those come from people who aren’t familiar with the local rules.
