Big changes are rolling through Thailand’s cannabis landscape. As of June 2025, the government has reclassified cannabis as a controlled substance, meaning you’ll now need a doctor’s prescription to legally purchase or consume it.
For many of us who have embraced the plant’s benefits, this sudden shift feels frustrating, confusing, and even disheartening. But rather than panic, this is a moment to adapt, organize, and elevate the conversation.
Here’s everything you need to know—and how Siam Green is stepping up.
What’s Changed?
Thailand, once hailed as Asia’s cannabis pioneer, has implemented new rules that restrict access to cannabis products unless they’re medically prescribed. Key updates include:
- Prescriptions required: Only certified healthcare professionals (doctors, pharmacists, dentists, and traditional healers) can issue a prescription for cannabis use, valid for up to 30 days. Siam Green can issue you these through our in house doctors at each branch.
- Strict dispensary compliance: Shops must now operate as medical dispensaries, complete with certified staff and controlled inventory tracking. All cannabis flower must be purchased from licensed cannabis facilities with quality certificates such as GACP or GAP.
- Something that hasn’t changed but needs to be re-emphasized: Smoking in public remains illegal! Please be responsible and do not smoke around public areas, or groups of people.
